General ZoneTag Questions
Why would I want to use ZoneTag?
- Tagging made easy
ZoneTag suggests likely tags for each photo, making it easy to add tags from your phone and even easier for you to find the photos later. The suggestions are based on tags made by you and your Flickr contacts in similar context, e.g. in the same location.
- Two-click upload to Flickr
Get your photos uploaded to Flickr in merely two clicks. No more searching for your photo to MMS to your friends or copying them to your computer first.
- Find your photos by location
ZoneTag can automatically tag your photos with the location, based on the cell tower, in which they were taken. The location of the cell tower is not known until our user community updates the city, state, or zip code of their photos on Flickr. ZoneTag is then able to map the cell tower to the location.
- Real-time privacy controls
You can specify on your phone who sees each photo you upload. You can also choose if you want location tags added to each photo.
- Easy setup
Your first photo will be on Flickr in five minutes. We'll take you through our quick and easy setup step-by-step.

How can I report a bug? I've got an idea that would make ZoneTag even cooler; how do I let you know about it? I took a photo with my cameraphone, but ZoneTag didn't ask me if I want to upload it to Flickr. What now?
If you are using the Nokia ZoneTag client, doh! Sorry, that means ZoneTag was not running on your cameraphone. ZoneTag needs to be running (although it does not have to be on screen) before you take a photo. How to run ZoneTag. My photo isn’t showing up on Flickr! If all that didn't work, well… we'll take the "it is a prototype" defense. We apologize for the inconvenience. Tell us what happened at zonetag-feedback@yahoo-inc.com I didn't upload my photo when ZoneTag asked me to, but I've changed my mind. How do I upload the photos stored on my phone to Flickr now?
If you have a Nokia ZoneTag client, it uploads your photo at the time of capture. If you choose to not upload it at that time, you will not be able to use ZoneTag to upload it later. You will need to use different methods to upload photos stored in your phone gallery to Flickr. What are location tags? What are "cell tags"?
ZoneTag combines four of the five codes to form one "virtual location tag" for your photo. The format of the tag is: cell:cgi=MCC-MNC-LAC-CELLID. You can click on this tag to see other photos you took in that same "virtual location."
Full cell tags How do you know my location? I don't want my location tags to be displayed on Flickr. I changed my mind and I want my location tags to be displayed on Flickr. How do I do that? I only see the cell ID for my Flickr photo. Where are the location tags for my photo? Our system will learn this information and will tag future pictures taken in that cell ID with the new location information. Please give us 24 hours to update the database with the new location information. You tagged the wrong location for my photo; how do I fix it? Our system will learn this information and will tag future pictures taken in that that cell ID with the new location information. Please give us 24 hours to update the database with the new location information. Feel free to delete the incorrect location tag from your Flickr photo. By the way, did we mention that this data will help make your experience, as well as other users' experience, better? Thanks! I know the exact GPS coordinates of my location when I took the photo. How can I include that information with my photo? Thanks, you rock! Please follow the tag format used by geobloggers (for example “geo:lat=37.3199” and “geo:lon=-121.8892”). You can specify the GPS coordinates as tags when you upload the photo from your phone. You can also manually change the location tags once it’s uploaded to Flickr. How does ZoneTag know what tags to suggest to me?
ZoneTag makes tagging easier for you -- by associating location with tags that you've used in that context before, publicly visible tags that your Flickr friends have used in that context before and tags that correspond to items in the Yahoo! Local database. Yahoo! Local objects are things like businesses, venues and events - you can also see them on Yahoo! Local and Upcoming. All suggested tags are tags that would be visible to you on the Flickr site or within the Yahoo! network. ZoneTag is constantly learning. And we will be tweaking our suggested tag algorithm to suggest the most useful tags for you. The more you use ZoneTag, the better the suggested tag feature will be. Please give us feedback! How often does ZoneTag contact the server?
ZoneTag contacts the server when it detects that you've moved into a different cell tower zone. If you have not changed your location in a while, then ZoneTag does nothing. However, if you are changing your location rapidly, then ZoneTag will try to contact the server more frequently in order to have the most up-to-date tag suggestions for your current location. You can configure whether to allow ZoneTag to periodically contact the server or not. See the instructions. Why does ZoneTag need to contact the server?
To save you time. In order to have the list of suggested tags ready for you to select at the time you're ready to upload your photo, ZoneTag needs to find out what those tags are ahead of time. Otherwise, you will not be presented with the most up-to-date tags for that location when you choose to upload your photo. You can configure whether to allow ZoneTag to periodically contact the server or not, and ask ZoneTag to get tags just before you start taking photos. See the instructions. Does this mean that ZoneTag knows where I am throughout the day?
No, absolutely not. We don't care about your location, unless you take a photo. In particular, we do not retain any record of which cell towers you travel through; not even a log of when your ZoneTag client contacted our server. The only information we store is the context that is associated with the photos you choose to upload. And like as always, you control the visibility of the location tags associated with your photos on Flickr. What if I don't want ZoneTag to contact the server?
You have full control and can configure ZoneTag to not contact the server. See the instructions. Remember that you can still have ZoneTag suggest relevant tags for you by manually refreshing the list of suggested tags. You might want to do that just before you take photos. Just go under ZoneTag "Options", select "Tag Suggestions" and choose "Refresh Now". Is my personal information kept confidential? Can other people discover my mobile number? Can other people see my location information? If you do not want to disclose this information, either choose to not apply location tags when you upload your photo to Flickr, or make sure that you keep your photos only visible to people you trust. Will my mobile phone number ever be given out to anyone? Will I be sent Spam? I want all my information erased from your database.

Wait. If you're using the Motorola ZoneTag client, then all is not lost. See instructions here.
That sucks. Let's assume that ZoneTag was running and you chose to upload that photo (well, if you read all the way down here, you've probably figured you have to run ZoneTag and how to do it). Sometimes, ZoneTag may have problems contacting the server to upload your photo (e.g., if Flickr is down, or you move into a weak cell signal spot). If ZoneTag is unable to complete the upload after several attempts, the photo will be placed into a queue and be uploaded with the next photo you take and upload. Remember, when your photo is successfully uploaded to Flickr, the photo filename in your phone's image gallery will be prepended with the letters "ZT".
If you have a Motorola ZoneTag client, see the instructions here.
Location tags identify the cellular tower that your phone connected to in order to upload your photo to Flickr. Each cellular tower that your carrier uses has a unique ID, which appear as "cell tags" in your photo.
ZoneTag automatically tags your photos on Flickr with infomation about the cell
tower you were connected to when you took the photo. Cell tower information is comprised of five numerical codes that represent the mobile network that you are connected to:
Your mobile network uses the codes to indicate what country, region, and city you were in when you took the photo.
From the ZoneTag settings page, you can configure ZoneTag to add each code as an individual cell tag: cell:network, cell:mcc, cell:mnc, cell:lac, and cell:cellid.
When you upload your photo to Flickr through your mobile phone, ZoneTag is able to detect which cellular tower your phone is using to connect. Your service provider assigns a unique cell ID to that cellular tower. ZoneTag attempts to translate this cell information to a location name that we mortals can understand. ZoneTag learns how to translate cells into locations from users like you!. There are three ways for you (and other users) to teach ZoneTag the correct location of the cell ID:
If even one user updates their Flickr photo with the location of that cell ID, we will be able to learn it and subsequent photos uploaded with the same cell ID will have the correct city, state and zip code tags automatically associated with the photo.
No problem. If you choose to upload your photo to Flickr, you will see a menu option, "Apply location tags?". Select "No", and your location tags and cell tags will not show up on Flickr. ZoneTag will remember this setting for subsequent photo uploads.
Once a photo is uploaded to Flickr, click on the "Update (or Fix) Location" link in the photo caption. You will be able to re-assign location tags to this photo and other nearby photos. For future uploads, remember to change your settings so that location tags are displayed; simply select "Yes" under the menu option "Apply location tags?".
We do not have location information yet for every cell ID. The good news is that you can easily add this information so your future photos will be correctly tagged. There are two ways that you can do this:
Oops! This can certainly happen - cell towers often cover multiple cities, and we may have chosen the wrong one; also, maybe there is a mistake in our data... but, good news! there are two ways that you can help us fix this:
Absolutely. We do not disclose any personal information to non-Yahoo! third parties. Remember, the information that you choose to display on Flickr is under your control and Flickr’s privacy agreements.
Absolutely not. There is no way for other people to discover your mobile phone number. We don’t even know your phone number! (even if you used it to have a link sent to you during installation).
If you choose to apply location tags and then share your photos publicly or with your friends and family, then they will be able to see the location tags and determine your general whereabouts at the time the photo was taken.
We don’t know what your mobile phone number is. So, uhh, no. Even if we had it - we'd guard it with our lives.
Spam? what is Spam? Oh, that Spam. No, we hate Spam. We will not send you Spam. Spam Spam Spam. However, we may contact you for feedback about your use of ZoneTag. ZoneTag is a research prototype - we value your participation and need your feedback. You can help make the cameraphone experience better for everyone!
Whatever we did to offend you, we didn’t mean it. Seriously, let us know and we’ll immediately do our best to remove your information and make it right. Send us email at zonetag-feedback@yahoo-inc.com
